Item: 93  Description: Confederate Porcelain Block. This insulator was dug at the Southern Porcelain factory site in Kaolin, South Carolina. Founded in 1856, the company made a variety of porcelain products until the outbreak of the Civil War. Historian Edwin Barber wrote that the company was then re-organized and went “into the extensive manufacture of porcelain and pottery telegraph insulators for the Confederate Government.” The factory was destroyed on October 13, 1864 in a fire unrelated to the war. This example is alkaline glazed, has been repaired from two pieces, and has additional damage as shown. Be sure to check out all three views.
