Item:Description: U-970 Porcelain Confederate Egg. This threadless insulator embodies the history of the fall of the Confederacy in April 1865. Dug in Richmond Virginia, its reddish color comes from having been burned during the destruction of the city. View 5 is an artist’s depiction of the burning of Richmond. You can listen to a podcast by Professor James Robertson, Jr. regarding the city’s destruction at: Web: www.wvtf.org/civil-war-series/2019-11-11/richmond-1865 This insulator last sold in a Poletop Discoveries Auction in January of 2022 where it brought $725 after heavy bidding.  Grade B: Several small wire ridge chips as shown in View 1, View 2 and View 3. There’s a small base deformity likely caused by having been burned visible in View 4 at the 5:00 o’clock position. Also in that view, note evidence of the porcelain having been hand carved / trimmed during manufacture of the insulator.
