Item: 52 Description: U-1364A Varley's 1860's Era British Insulator. This historic insulator exemplifies the state of British telegraphy 165 years ago thanks to the patents of engineer C.F. Varley. The NIA's website quotes an excerpt from an 1868 issue of Scientific American: "Varley's insulator is that most commonly employed in England. It consists of two separate red-earthen ware cups, cemented together with sulphur. The outer cup is provided with a groove to which the line wire is bound; in the recess of the inner cup a wrought iron bolt is cemented, by which the insulator is attached to the bracket on the post." This example has the original pin. Due to the age, we presume these are threadless. Grade B-Plus: No chips nor fractures. It does have ten or so thin, small, flakes & nibbles around base & upper wire ridge. Check out all three views. Estimate: $100 - $120 Open: $65 Price realized: $110 |
