Item: 400  Description: Ink Bottle: Monitor Shape. Embossed: J & I E M Pat Oct 31st 1865. John Moore and his son, Isaac Elijah, founded an ink company in Warren, MA in the late 1850’s. During the Civil War John applied for a patent for an ink bottle shaped like the Union Navy ironclad gunboat, the Monitor. The patent was granted in the fall of 1865. Other companies later made similar ink bottles, and sometimes this shape is called an “igloo” or a “turtle”.  Grade B: Paper thin flake on bottom and another paper thin flake off the sheared top (visible in View 2). I did NOT remove the cork and so the bottle was not cleaned.
