Item: 397 Description: Miner’s Lamp: Hand forged by a skilled blacksmith, this Miner’s Lamp is made from a single piece of metal. The SPIKE is shaped like a square nail that tapers to a point. That square shape then turns round at the HANDLE LOOP before flattening out and becoming five times wider for the CANDLE SOCKET and then becoming round again for the HOOK. To use these, miners would hammer on the HANDLE LOOP to drive the spike into a timber or wall of the shaft. A candle placed in the CANDLE SOCKET provided light for the worker. The HOOK was an alternate way to hang the lamp… perhaps from a hat, belt or overhead rock ledge. Would make a great go-with for your display of CD 185 Jeffrey, Hemingray, or Star mine insulators.
