Item: 387 Description: CD 288 No Embossing (020 Denver Product.) This insulator represents an important part of the folk lore of our hobby. William McLaughlin started work at Robert Good’s glass factory in Valverde, CO at the age of 13. That would have been in 1897. He was paid 50-cents a day (nine hours) to assist in making insulators. When an order came in to make power insulators (CD 288’s) the crew was having trouble producing undamaged insulators as the screw plug operated by McLaughlin was damaging the crowns. Good was angry until McLaughlin figured out the problem. McLaughlin eventually operated his own glass factory in Southern California making insulators and bottles. The full story of the making of this insulator is told in Fred Padgett’s book about McLaughlin, “Dreams of Glass.” The flaking at the base of the umbrella in View 1 is excess glass formed during production. This one has a large base chip. It can stand up on its own, but I’d recommend using a pin on a base to display it. Grade C-Minus . Estimate: $200 - $250 Open: $150 Current bid: No bids yet |
