Item: 35  Description: U-990 Confederate “Tea Pot” Insulator. This insulator was dug at the Southern Porcelain factory site in Kaolin, South Carolina. Founded in 1856, the company made a variety of porcelain products until the outbreak of the Civil War. Historian Edwin Barber wrote that the company was then re-organized and went “into the extensive manufacture of porcelain and pottery telegraph insulators for the Confederate Government.” The factory was destroyed on October 13, 1864 in a fire unrelated to the war. This insulator was unglazed, and has an original “spout” re-attached. Be sure to check out all four views.
