Item: 271 Description: CD 154 Min Com Cuba. The embossing is upside down. Color: Dark Straw. Our consignor sent this insulator to Paul Greaves to have it repaired. Paul writes that a previous owner fractured the insulator while trying to forcibly remove it from a pin. The individual used WD40 to lubricate the pin in removing the piece. Unfortunately, when the insulator fractured, the WD40 got into the cracks. As a result of the oil, Paul wasn’t able to use UV epoxy like is used in windshield repairs. Instead, he used microscopic immersion oil, a non-evaporating oil with a similar refraction index as glass. As View 1 and View 2 show, his repair efforts look great. In View 3 and View 4, I took pictures to intentionally show the fractures. That area of the insulator naturally has fizz, milk, graphite and bubbles that contribute to making the fractures difficult to notice. The glass below the wire groove on the reverse is also pitted as if the insulator was partially buried. Grade R = REPAIRED. Min Com Cuba insulators are scarce. I’ve sold undamaged examples in the past for as much as $400. Estimate: $150 - $200 Open: $120 Closing price: $120 |
