Item: 1 Description: M-2795 Fred M. Locke “Gutter Top”. This is one of our hobby’s CLASSIC insulators. It was designed in 1900 for use on a power line that ran from a hydroelectric project in California’s Sierra Mountains to San Francisco. Note that the pictures were taken out-of-doors on a bright sunny day with a white cloth backdrop. In View 1, I edited out the shadows. View 2 is of the other side of the insulator. View 3 shows one side of the top and pictures the primary marking. It’s what collectors’ catalog as Locke’s 1-5 marking. In Elton Gish’s Value Guide, he lists 10 to 15 M-2795’s known with this marking versus 60 to 80 known with a different marking. View 4 shows the other side of the top and Locke’s 0-1c marking. View 5 is a closeup of the spout to show some flaking. There are several things to see in View 6 where the insulator is upside down. First, I’ll point out that this is an all-original piece with the glass and porcelain held together by sulfur cement. Next, note the typical flaking on the underside of the umbrella. Third, there is a bubble on the glass base that has flaked open. Back to View 3, see the flake and nibbles on one side of the crown. I’ll rate the insulator as Grade B . Estimate: $3,000 - $3,500 Open: $2,000 |
